Supervisors:Dr. Subhashis BanerjeeDr. Prem Kalra Abstract:We implemented a fractal image encoder, based on ideas described by Barnsley et al. This encoding mechanism involves constructing a contraction map, whose fixed point is the image to be encoded. By constructing a map in way so as to take advantage of the "self-similarity" of the image (that is, redundancy at different scales), we achieve a scale-invariant compression. We present a comparison of the performance of our encoder with DCT. We also present an attempt to use fractal methods to synthesize images of clouds and terrains.
