Dual Degree Program

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Delhi is renowned for imparting state of the art graduate and undergraduate education and preparing its students for real world challenges. We attract the brightest students from the country who score very high ranks in the IIT-JEE, arguably the toughest entrance exam for any academic institution. Our alumni have done extremenly well and the list of their achievements is too big to list here, which include managing top companies, designing revolutionary products, and contributing to fundamental research.

Some reasons why you should consider joining us :

History

The Dual degree programme in Computer Science and Engineering was started in 1997 with the first batch graduating in 2002. It is a five year programmme with the students entitled to both B.Tech. and M.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering at the end of five years. The intake each year is 20 students.

Motivation and Objectives

The motivation behind starting this programme has been mainly to build on the excellent base created through basic science, engineering and CS courses in the undergraduate curriculum to carry out an in-depth project/thesis work in the final year. This project activity starts in the summer following the 8th semester. A substantial part of the 9th semester and all of the 10th semester are devoted to the project. A dual degree project is expected to result in a publication, a prototype or an open-source release.

Differences with the Four Year Programme

The undergraduate component of the dual degree programme is identical to that of the 4-year B.Tech. (CSE) . This is followed with specialized elective courses in the 7th, 8th and 9th semesters and an intensive Masters thesis in the 9th and 10th semesters. In contrast to the 4-year programme, the dual-degree programme has more time and space to allow students to pursue research level interests and pick up additional skills.

Status and Experiences

The students joining this programme have consistently shown a high-degree of maturity in their final year. They have taken up complex projects and have implemented them successfully. Further, they have focused on specific professional goals and career options. A much larger fraction of five year dual degree students join technology startups and R&D setups of front runner companies. This is mainly due to their enhanced skills and research experience, coupled with a much stronger interaction with the faculty. Seven graduates of this programme along with faculty initiated the first faculty-student led technology startup in 2002 ( Kritikal Solutions ). This has turned out to be a role model for graduating students leading to half a dozen other startups.

B. Tech. Program

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Delhi is renowned for imparting state of the art undergraduate education and preparing its students for real world challenges. We attract the brightest students from the country who score very high ranks in the IIT-JEE, arguably the toughest entrance exam for any academic institution. Our alumni have done extremely well and the list of their achievements is too big to list here, which include managing top companies, designing revolutionary products, and contributing to fundamental research.

Some reasons why you should consider joining us :

Strong Undergraduate Program

· The undergraduate curriculum provides a strong foundation in all areas of computer science.

· The recently revised curriculum has reduced course load and greater emphasis on design and project work. It emphasizes the need for independent thinking and encourages students to get involved in interesting and novel projects. Further, a significant increase in the open category credits enables students to have a broad base and pursue interests and develop expertise in other areas like Mathematics, Communications, Signal Processing, Bio-informatics, Robotics, Management etc. in addition to core Computer Science.

· In addition to the course projects, a typical undergraduate student does four projects during his/her stay.

· The department has state of the art facilities for carrying out projects in computer graphics, vision, networks, distributed systems, hardware design and artificial intelligence.

· Students are encouraged to come up with ideas on their own and the department provides all the facilities required to materialize those ideas into actual projects. Many of our student projects have won awards in various competitions. Check out some recent student projects . Our students also publish regularly in reputed journals and conferences ( link ).

· The undergraduate curriculum gives the students sufficient freedom to choose courses with emphasis on a particular area of computer science. The department has expertise in all the core areas of computer science and its faculty are well-known for their research activities.

Our students are highly sought after by industry and end up with lucrative jobs. Those who choose graduate studies get admission in the top ranked universities in the world. Many of our students have chosen to join or even create their own start-up companies ( Kritikal Solutions ).

Faculty Student Interaction

· The department has a strong faculty , all Ph. D.'s from leading universities and active in research. The department also attracts a regular stream of visiting faculty members. Our faculty are diligently involved in training students and preparing them for the future ahead.

· The students interact freely with faculty on all matters related to studies. The curriculum gives them ample opportunity to work in close cooperation with any faculty member. Students are free to approach faculty for short term (a summer or a semester) project or long term projects.

The class sizes for core department courses are kept reasonably small and there are interaction sessions where problems of each student get addressed.

Cultural Activities

· Students are actively involved in organizing various cultural activities ( Tryst, Rendezvous ).

· The IIT campus provides a green and pollution free environment. It provides facilities for various sports activities and hobbies .

IIT is located in the heart of the vibrant and lively city of Delhi. It is conveniently located and well connected to all the attractions of the city including historical monuments, theatres, markets, parks. Many popular tourist locations like Shimla, Agra, Jaipur, Nainital are only a few hour drive from here.

M. Tech. Program

The M. Tech. programme in Computer Science and Engineering (code: MCS) is a Masters programme offered to students who are interested in advanced learning and research in any area of computer science.

Applicants to this programme are expected to already have an excellent background in computer science. (It is not a skills conversion programme).

The programme is a 60-credit degree programme, which is usually spread over 4 semesters for a full-time student. About two-thirds of the credits involve coursework, and the remainder consists of project work. The emphasis is on conducting original research and writing a thesis (individually) that reports these results. The programme is flexible enough to allow a student to specialize in any topic of interest by taking elective courses and working on a research project in that area.

Placements have been excellent (100%), and our graduates have been employed at the top research laboratories and companies in the country and even abroad.

Students are provided top quality laboratory and infrastructure facilities. We endeavour to provide financial support at Master's level stipends to all GATE-qualified full-time students. Full-time students not resident in Delhi are given priority in allotment of hostel accommodation.

Specializations

In addition to the general M.Tech degree, we also offer MTech degrees with specialization in any one of the following areas:

  • Computer Graphics, Vision and Multimedia
  • Computer Networks and Distributed Systems
  • Algorithms and Complexity
  • Formal Methods in Software
  • Embedded Systems and Architecture
  • Software Systems

The requirement for the specialization degreeis that the student must complete at least 30 credits in the area of specialization at the 700-level or higher, subject to the following constraints:

  1. Major Project parts 1 and 2 (adding up to 18 credits) are in that area. (The supervisor certifies that the project is in the area of specialization.)
  2. The remaining 12 credits are from the basket of courses identified for that area, with at least 3 credits at the 800 level. (In the case of Independent Study and some of the Special Topics courses, the supervisor/instructor indicates which specialization area.)
  3. Not more than 4 core credits apart from Major project (i.e., from Minor Project or CSL 758 Advanced Algorithms or CSL 718 Architecture of High Performance Systems) can be counted towards the 30 credits.

Switching programmes

It is also possible to switch your programme of study mid-way. Interested students who have demonstrated excellence in their academic performance and research potential have the opportunity to convert to the Ph. D. programme or to the MS (Research) programme.

M. Tech. in CSE with Advanced Standing

Students at IIT Delhi pursuing a B. Tech. programme in any discipline have the option of obtaining an M. Tech. in Computer Science (Programme code: MCS) by investing an additional 2-3 semesters after the end of their B. Tech. programme.
