Admission to PhD programme in Computer Science

[ Program ]     [ Admissions ]     [ Rules ]     [ FAQ ]

There are two different ways in which you can register for a Ph.D. in CSE at IITD.
Full-Time : The candidate resides on the IIT campus for the entire duration of the Ph.D. programme. This residency requirement can be reduced with the consent of the student's advisor but the department expects that every student will be resident for at least 3 years.
Part-Time : The candidate should be working in an industry/organisation involved in computer science research/teaching and located within 50 kms of IIT.

Candidates working more than 50 kms away from IIT Delhi should keep in mind that they would have to take at least 3 years leave from work to be able to pursue  Ph.D. at IIT Delhi.

Eligibility : The candidate should be a
M.Tech. in Computer Science or a related discipline (Computer Technology, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Electronics and Communication etc).
B.E./B.Tech/M.Sc. in Computer Science or related discipline or MCA with a valid GATE score in CS/IT/ECE
M.Sc in Maths/Physics/Statistics with a valid GATE score in their subject

Graduates in Science/Engineering with an outstanding academic record and a valid GATE score in their subject can also be considered for admission.

Admission Procedure:
Download the application form from the IIT Delhi web-site by following the Admissions tab.
Fill the form and attach a draft for Rs 300 made payable to the "Registrar, IIT Delhi" at New Delhi.
Also attach a curriculum vitae listing your academic record, Industrial/Research Experience, Research Publications (also include a copy of your best publication), academic honors and awards etc.
Send the application to the "Assistant Registrar, Post Graduate Section. IIT, Hauz Khas, New Delhi 110016
The application can be sent at any time of the year.

After looking at your application we will decide (usually within a month) whether to invite you for an interview. Shortlisting criteria for previous admissions can be checked here for reference. You would be informed of the decision by email. The interview would test your familiarity with basic concepts in Computer Science and your ability to analyze and formulate a solution to a problem.

Candidates applying from abroad will also have to appear, in person , for an interview. Such candidates should specify the approximate period when they plan to be in the country so that we can pick the interview dates suitably.
